GMR Group to run airport in Hyderabad for additional 30 years

Infrastructure firm GMR Group can now handle the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad till 2068.

The company told the media that the central government had extended GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited's (GHIAL) period of the concession agreement for 30 years more.

It was India's first greenfield airport developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The airport was commissioned in 31 months and inaugurated in March 2008.

Initially, the airport had a passenger capacity of 1.2 crore annually, which increased to 2.1 crore in 2019.

Currently, the airport is under a major expansion project, which will increase its passengers capacity to 3.4 crore annually. The airport intends to increase its capacity to 10 crore passengers annually.

The company said that it is the largest private airport operator in Asia and the second largest across the world, having a passenger handling capacity of over 18.9 crore annually. GMR Group operates airports in Delhi, Hyderabad and Cebu, Philippines.

It has recently acquired the development and operation project of Kualanamu International Aiport in Medan, Indonesia. Further, the company is developing three greenfield airport projects in Goa, Bhogapuram and Crete airports.
