Government targets to have 220 airports by 2025

The Government of India (GoI) has set a target to increase the number of airports to 220 from the current number of 140 by 2025.

Minister Scindia told the media that nearly 3.82 lakh passengers have flown daily in the last seven days and that the ministry has targeted to almost triple the air traffic by 2023-24 to 40 crore. Two new airlines named Jet and Akasa will soon be launching their services at a time when the global airline industry is facing obstacles.

Scindia said that there were 74 airports in India till 2014 and 66 new ones had been added in the last seven years. They have almost doubled their capacity in these years. Now the resolution is to make this number 220 by 2025.

According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data, in 2021 8.38 crore people traveled via domestic flights, in comparison with 6.3 crore in the year 2020. The number of passengers increased to 14.50 crore in 2018-19 from 6.70 crore in 2013-14. The number of planes have also increased to 710 by 2018-19 from 400 from 2013-14.
