Only early 2023 will see the start of commercial operations at the eagerly anticipated Terminal 2 of
Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). On November 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally
announced the start of the Rs 50,000million project, with domestic operations set to begin by the
end of December.
Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), which operates the airport, said information about
the launch would be made public next week but did not provide a particular start date. An official
announcement read, "BIAL will officially announce the launch of Bengaluru Airport's Terminal 2
operations very shortly.
There is no way it can be launched at this time, according to a source familiar with the proceedings.
There is still some crucial finishing to accomplish for domestic operations. As far as we know, it will
occur by January 15. According to a different source, February 15 could be possibility.
"The multi-modal transportation hub and parking lot are not yet complete. The public must park in
the T1 bay, and the trek from T1 to T2 is difficult with luggage. Even though there are only 200
metres separating the two terminals, one cannot enter T2 from T1, according to a source.
According to a different source, the electrical work is not yet finished. According to a staff member,
only landscaping was done on the exterior to make it look nice at the launch; however, interior
landscaping has not yet been completed.
None of the airlines we spoke to indicated they had plans to run flights out of T2 this year.
For international operations, which are scheduled to begin at T2 in mid-2023, much work needs to
still be done. There is enough time, according to a source, to instal full body cameras at the
immigration checkpoint area, luggage scanners at stores, and retail locations. Due to the epidemic,
the original deadline of March 2021 was never met.
CISF to boost strength
The CISF, which oversees overall airport security, will add approximately 2,200 new employees, or
60% of its current total. According to a source, the airport police station would also be hiring more
people.
