Kerala to Make World’s First Hydrogen-Fuelled VTOL Aircraft Ecosystem

In a major step towards sustainable aviation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has signed a quadripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BluJ Aerospace, ANERT (Agency for New and Renewable Energy Research and Technology), and Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) to develop the world’s first hydrogen-fuelled Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft ecosystem.

The MoU, signed on March 12 by key representatives from BPCL, ANERT, BluJ Aerospace, and CIAL, supports India’s 2070 net-zero target and marks a significant milestone in green aviation. The project will enhance urban and regional air mobility by integrating hydrogen-powered VTOL aircraft, improving speed, efficiency, and noise reduction while drastically cutting carbon emissions.

BPCL will set up hydrogen refuelling infrastructure for BluJ Aerospace’s VTOL aircraft at its upcoming Hydrogen Refueling Stations (HRS) in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. It will also focus on R&D initiatives, including the development of an Indigenous Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Hydrogen Fuel Cell, designed to provide high power density for vertical lift-off operations.

These HRS facilities will play a crucial role in Kerala’s Hydrogen Valley Programme, led by ANERT, driving research, pilot projects, and commercial hydrogen applications. The initiative aims to accelerate hydrogen-powered transportation and strengthen India’s position as a global leader in green energy solutions.
