The last nine years have been transformative for the country's aviation sector, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as existing airports have been modernised, new airports have been built at a rapid pace, and a record number of people have flown. Modi made the remarks in response to a tweet from the civil aviation ministry commemorating the six-year anniversary of the UDAN regional air connectivity scheme. There are now 473 routes and 74 operational airports, heliports, and water aerodromes under the scheme. On April 27, 2017, the first UDAN flight between Shimla and Delhi took place. This enhanced connectivity has given a big impetus to commerce and tourism. #UDANat6, Modi said in a tweet. Domestic air traffic has been steadily increasing. According to the most recent official data, domestic airlines carried 375.04 lakh passengers from January to March this year, a significant increase from the 247.23 lakh people flown in the same period last year.
