The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), India's largest energy company, supplied over 200 Thousand Metric Tonnes (TMT) of bitumen for the construction of Uttar Pradesh's historic Purvanchal Expressway. On November 16, 2021, India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, dedicated the 341 Km long expressway to the nation. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) completed the Purvanchal Expressway, India's longest expressway, in a record time of 36 months. The Purvanchal Expressway is a six-lane highway that can be expanded to eight lanes in the future, and it cost Rs 22,500 crore to build. Over 90% of the bitumen required for the project was supplied by IndianOil, which supplied 201 TMT, including Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB). The products were made at Indian Oil's refineries in Mathura and Panipat. Indian Oil demonstrated its commitment to sustainable development by recycling one lakh discarded tyres to produce the CRMB required for the project, resulting in a Carbon dioxide reduction of approximately 3,200 metric tonnes (mt).
