General V K Singh (Retd) said that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been emphasising newer technologies to build better quality roads in less time and cost. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) also stressed the importance of agreement between the central government and the states to ensure development. In a meeting organised by the NHAI, Singh said that the Authority has been prioritising new technologies to be incorporated, good quality roads are made quickly at less cost, and it becomes convenient for the citizens to run their vehicles on them. Singh said that the Bharatmala Pariyojana project addressed this concern. Under Bharatmala Pariyojana, the connectivity with border areas, economic corridors and other countries has increased. He said good roads can be built if environmental concerns are addressed. Chairperson of NHAI, Alka Upadhyaya, 30 projects of 2,100 km with a capital investment of over Rs 1 lakh crore have already been executed since 2014. These national highways (NHs) are either four-lane or six-lane. About 50 such projects are ongoing, of 2,200 km and cost Rs 73,000 crore. Upadhyaya said one of the targets under the Amrit Mahotsav plan was to plant a record number of saplings along the national highways. She added the NHAI planned to plant 10 lakh saplings in the coming monsoon season in Uttar Pradesh. NHAI and Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for planting saplings on NHAI land.
