The Eastern Freeway in Mumbai has been very useful to commuters, but it has also added to the bottleneck at Panjrapole junction in Chembur. To avoid this, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) now plans to ease the congestion at Panjrapole junction in Chembur by building an additional flyover. The planned flyover arm will help divert traffic towards BARC junction. In June, the first 14 km phase of EFW corridor connecting CST with Chembur was opened to traffic. This helped reduce travel time between the two destinations to less than 25 minutes against at least 45 minutes earlier. More than 40,000 vehicles use the EFW daily. Now MMRDA plans to build a flyover that will take vehicles directly from EWF to BARC junction and back. Presently, vehicles descending at Chembur have to go around Panjrapole junction before hitting Sion-Trombay Road. This movement slows down traffic.The junction, also known as Shivaji Chowk, caters to traffic to and from Navi Mumbai via Sion-Trombay Road, W T Patil Marg, Dr Chotiram Gidwani Marg and Din Quarry Road. Other than cars, due to the presence of refineries in the area, the junction also sees heavy vehicular traffic. Wadala truck terminal as well as Mumbai Port Trust also adds to the traffic along the route.
