Jharkhand's Gumla awaits all-weather roads

In Jharkhand, hundreds of hamlets and villages are still devoid of all-weather roads in the Naxalite-affected Gumla district, though roads are being constructed in the township. Despite the ongoing ninth phase of the PGMGSY, remote habitations - both small and big - are awaiting road connectivities.

A number of roads in different blocks are now damaged because of lack of maintenance. According to the Rural Works Department, there are 391 habitations with over 500 to 100 population which have no all-weather motorable roads. Undulating roads connecting panchayat and block headquarters built under the MGNREGA will be washed out during the rain and these roads will not be motorable, say residents of Basua village, citing example of a road.

A proposal for roads for 103 habitations with at least 100 inhabitants has been prepared and the detailed project report (DPR) is also ready, according to an engineer of the RWD department. A number of old rural metallic roads have become wretched due to lack of maintenance and the commuters are facing a lot of difficulties, added B Bhagat, a district board member.
