NCP suggests govt to go for road tolls in lieu of entry tax

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has said that the Goa government should scrap the recently-imposed entry tax and introduce tolls on major roads in the state like the one going to Calangute, instead of imposing an entry tax at borders.

Sawantwadi NCP MLA who is also the observer for Goa, Deepak Kesarkar, said that the government could consider tolls on major roads in the state. He felt a one-point entry tax will create inconvenience for Goan people as all supplies to the state will be affected and hence the toll system for certain roads would be a better option.

If a state wants to develop infrastructure, it can impose a toll (on certain roads) instead of an entry tax, he said. Kesarkar said he had met Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and PWD Minister Ramkrishna 'Sudin' Dhavlikar and both had assured him that they would give some relaxation on the entry tax soon to areas like Sindhudurg.

He felt this should also be applied to Belgaum, Kolhapur and Karwar as people from these places frequently come to Goa and contribute to the betterment of Goan people. Neighbouring areas should be exempted from the tax, he said.
