BBMP Approves White-Topping for 150 km of Bengaluru Roads

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has approved the white-topping of 150 kilometres of roads in Bengaluru, aiming to improve road durability and reduce maintenance costs. This significant infrastructure upgrade is expected to enhance the city's transportation network, benefiting commuters and residents alike.
White-topping involves covering existing asphalt roads with a layer of concrete, which is more durable and requires less maintenance than traditional asphalt. The project targets major arterial and sub-arterial roads that experience heavy traffic, aiming to provide a smoother and longer-lasting surface.
BBMP officials highlighted that white-topping offers several advantages, including increased road lifespan, reduced potholes, and better resistance to wear and tear. Additionally, concrete roads are more environmentally friendly as they reflect more sunlight and reduce the urban heat island effect.
The project is set to be implemented in phases to minimise disruption to traffic flow. BBMP has identified key stretches of roads for initial white-topping, prioritising areas with the most significant traffic congestion and road deterioration. The selected roads include major thoroughfares connecting important commercial, residential, and industrial zones.
Residents and commuters in Bengaluru have long faced challenges with potholes and road damage, particularly during the monsoon season. The white-topping initiative is expected to address these issues, providing a safer and more reliable road network.
The BBMP has allocated substantial funds for the project, reflecting its commitment to improving the city's infrastructure. The white-topping project aligns with Bengaluru's broader efforts to modernise its urban infrastructure and support sustainable urban development.
Upon completion, the white-topped roads are anticipated to significantly enhance driving conditions, reduce vehicle maintenance costs, and contribute to the overall efficiency of the city's transportation system. The BBMP's proactive approach to infrastructure development underscores its dedication to meeting the needs of Bengaluru's growing population and ensuring a better quality of life for its residents.
