BMC claims 50% of work on Coastal Road second tunnel done

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) says it has completed 50% of the work on the second tunnel in the Coastal Road project. The tunnel runs from Girgaon Chowpatty to Priyadarshani Park at Nepean Sea Road.

Additional municipal commissioner Ashwini Bhide, who is in charge of the Coastal Road works, said in a tweet, "TBM Mavala just completed its 1,000 mts of tunnelling in merely 109 days on its second drive from Girgaon Chowpaty to PDP in #MumbaiCoastalRoad project of @mybmc. 50% of the second tunnel is done. Congratulations to L&T team, #BMC team as well as PMC & GC teams for this superb feat."

Officials from the civic body said they expect the tunnel drive to be completed by December 2022.

The two-tube twin tunnels will start near Girgaon chowpatty, pass below Tambe Chowk, Khilachand Garden, the BMC's Malabar Hill reservoir, Hanging Garden and Hyderabad Estate in Nepean Sea Road before coming out at Priyadarshani Park. This would require motorists to pass through a cut-and-cover tunnel at the entry and exit.

The boring of one tunnel was completed in January this year and it is currently witnessing the construction of the utility box, surface areas and cross passage ways.
