Bombay HC orders NHAI to repair highway joining Amravati-Nagpur

The Bombay High Court has ordered the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to repair the national highway that connects Amravati and Nagpur districts as soon as possible.

The bench of Justices Anil Kilor and Sunil Shukre was hearing public interest litigation (PIL) highlighting the poor condition of the roads.

It looks that this road which connects Amravati and Malkapur districts is under repair, and also its widening is going on for over the last five to six years. Instead of witnessing any improvement in the road condition, there is a deterioration in the road condition, the bench noted.

The judges further said that at many other places the road is not seen in reality.

It is also brought to notice that this highway's Nagpur and Amravati stretch is in poor condition, as no road repairs are being done. At various places, large potholes and the possibility of accidents occurring, leading to human life loss and property are high, the bench noted further.

The judges were also notified that while the toll is religiously collected by the Contractor, the responsibility to keep the road well maintained and user-friendly is frequently breached.

The counsel looking for the authorities asked some time to file an affidavit to spell out the present condition of the roads.

The authorities would have to ensure that on the next date the latest status report on completion of all works of road between Amravati and Malkapur is submitted by them, the judges directed.

Also, authorities will have to ensure that making the road stretch between Nagpur and Amravati, smooth and strong, for vehicular traffic is filed by them, the judges ordered.

The judges further directed the authorities to submit photographs of the spots.
