Chennai Peripheral Ring Road Nears 2025 Completion

Spanning 132.87 kilometres, the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road (CPRR) is set to transform regional connectivity across Tamil Nadu. The six-lane, access-controlled expressway will link Ennore Port to Mahabalipuram, joining several key national highways. With an estimated cost of Rs 123 billion, the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. The Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) is overseeing its implementation.
The CPRR will pass through seven major urban areas including Singaperumalkoil, Sriperumbudur, Tiruvallur, Tamaraipakkam, Periyapalayam, Puduvoyal, and Kattupalli. Once operational, it will connect to NH5 (Chennai鈥揟ada), NH4 (Chennai鈥揃engaluru), NH45 (Chennai鈥揟iruchirappalli), and the East Coast Road (ECR), significantly enhancing road mobility across the region.
In addition to its main lanes, the expressway will feature service roads for local traffic to ensure seamless vehicular movement. According to a Magicbricks report, the CPRR will also directly connect Ennore and Kattupalli ports, strengthening logistics access.
The CPRR will be integrated with major National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) corridors such as the Bengaluru鈥揅hennai and Chittoor鈥揟hatchur expressways. Designed for speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour, the route will include an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to enhance road safety and traffic management.
Meanwhile, Indian Railways plans to launch the Amrit Bharat Express service between Howrah and Chennai in the 2025鈥�26 financial year. This special train will travel via Visakhapatnam, covering the 1,662-kilometre journey in under 26 hours. Operating twice weekly, the service will offer a maximum speed of 130 km/h, further improving intercity travel between eastern and southern India.
