The Delhi public works department (PWD) plans to make the Mathura Road stretch traffic signal-free to end traffic jams and make commutation between central and south Delhi easier. According to the officials, the PWD will remove all the five traffic signals from the road stretch and provide four U-turn underpasses for smooth commuting. Officials said that the work is part of the ongoing Pragati Maidan corridor redevelopment project. No construction works are allowed on the Mathura Road as it has several Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) monuments like Purana Qila. The stretch also includes a crafts museum and National Zoological Park. The removal of traffic signals and implementation of back-to-back U-turns will provide relief to commuters while not disturbing any monuments. He said that the Mathura Road traffic starts from ITO W point till Sundar Nagar, Kaka Nagar, Lodhi Road and other areas. Due to the traffic signals, traffic on this stretch has always been heavy and slow-moving. The U-turn will provide direct connectivity to Pragati Maidan parking, administrative office and other regions. He added that apart from the two other underpasses on Bhairon Marg, one at Tilak Marg and a 1.2 km long tunnel at Pragati Maidan are also coming up to decongest the entire area, which will be open to public use by the end of May.
