Due to high input prices, highway construction slowed down in Q1

The first quarter of the current fiscal year has seen a slowdown in national highway development due to elevated commodity prices. Less than the 25 kilometre per day seen in the same period of the previous fiscal, the pace of building in the quarter was just 22 km per day. Throughout the entire FY22, the pace was 29 km per day.

The rate of construction this year, however, is faster than what was observed in the pandemic-affected first quarter of FY20.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has set an "aspirational aim" of constructing 50 km of highway per day for the fiscal year 2022鈥�2023. Over 18,000 km are converted throughout the entire fiscal year.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and all other implementing agencies built about 2,000 km of highway between April and June of this year.
