The central government has approved the construction of a flyover in Belagavi to alleviate the growing traffic congestion in the city. This project is a long-held aspiration of Minister Satish Jarkiholi, who has been advocating for it for a significant period. The proposal for the flyover received approval during a meeting chaired by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi a week earlier. Jarkiholi had met with Gadkari on multiple occasions to discuss the project. The estimated cost of the flyover is Rs 45 billion. This will be the first flyover in Belagavi, spanning 4.5 kilometres from the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway to the ICMR Centre at the city's northern entry point. The route will pass through Rani Channamma Circle and Ambedkar Road, starting from Sankam Hotel in Gandhi Nagar, proceeding through Ashok Circle and Sangolli Rayanna Circle, and then reaching Channamma Circle. From there, it will continue towards the ICMR Centre via KLE Hospital. Once completed, the flyover is expected to greatly alleviate traffic issues in the city. The preliminary plans indicate that there will be two ramps at Ashok Circle, one leading towards RTO Circle and another towards Mahantesh Nagar, both connected to the flyover. Additionally, there will be three ramps at RTO Circle: one towards Channamma Circle, another towards Kolhapur Circle, and the third towards the central bus terminus. Another road will link to Sambra Airport Road via a road over-bridge at Gandhi Nagar. Arches are also planned for the roads that connect to Channamma Circle. In January, Jarkiholi held an initial meeting with officials from various relevant departments and instructed officials from Belagavi Smart City Limited, Belagavi City Corporation, Hescom, and BSNL to take the necessary steps to implement the flyover project. According to sources in the district administration, another meeting is expected to take place this week to further discuss the project's implementation.
