Govt targets 18,000 km highway construction in FY23

The road transport and highways ministry has aimed to construct a record 18,000 km of highways in 2022-23 at a steady pace of 50 km per day. The FY23 target is reportedly 33 per cent higher than the last fiscal, which had a 40-km per day construction goal initially but had been later revised to 32 km per day at 12,000 km for the full fiscal.

The government plans to award construction contracts of 18,000 km to this extent in FY23.

In the span of time between the two waves of COVID and monsoon rains, the government has reportedly constructed 10,457 km of national highways in 2021-22 through its implementing agencies, which was a 24 per cent decrease from the previous fiscal.
