The Public Works Department (PWD) has initiated the commencement of work on a sports complex beneath the Lajpat Nagar flyover as part of the streetscaping and beautification project covering a 5.5-kilometre stretch from Moolchand to Ashram. The objective of the project was to eradicate encroachments from the vacant spaces beneath the flyover structure prior to the G20 Summit. A PWD official stated that numerous homeless individuals tend to encroach upon public lands, making it challenging to evict them. Additionally, some of them cause damage to public property. The construction work has begun to develop the sports complex. The complex is being built beneath the 2.5-kilometre long Lajpat Nagar flyover, where facilities such as badminton, table tennis, squash courts, and a multipurpose hall for open gym, yoga, and meditation will be available. Furthermore, there will be a designated sitting area and a parking space near the sports complex. That additional amenities may be incorporated along the stretch wherever space permits. Initially, the plan is to offer free access to the public for this sports complex. However, over time, nominal charges will be imposed for its maintenance. Currently, the PWD has reconstructed sidewalks, footpaths, and pavements on this stretch. Cycle tracks, walking areas, benches, chairs, pergola sheds, and decorative smart lights have also been installed. The complex will be protected by iron gates, adorned with designer lights and street furniture, as well as adorned with plants. Considering that the Lajpat Nagar flyover is located on the Ring Road and is surrounded by commercial and residential areas, the department intends to establish zebra crossings and other safety facilities for public convenience.
