The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is moving forward with plans to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the expansion of three significant stretches of National Highways in Tamil Nadu. These projects involve doubling the two-lane highways of the Dindigul - Theni - Kumili section, the Tiruchy - Karaikudi section, and the Nagapattinam - Thanjavur section, covering a combined length of 292 km. Among these, the Dindigul - Theni - Kumili stretch is the longest, measuring 131 km along NH 183. This section's two-laning was completed in 2020 after nearly a decade of work, with the Rs 280 crore project initially commencing in 2011. The planned expansion to four lanes is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The 81-km road from Tiruchy to Karaikudi has already seen some upgrades, with two-way traffic and paved shoulders added approximately 13 years ago. Although this stretch was initially intended to be converted into a four-lane highway, the NHAI had to pause the plan due to insufficient traffic volume at that time. This route is vital for connectivity to key locations, including Rameswaram, Ramanathapuram, and Sivaganga, as well as several interior and coastal towns. The Nagapattinam - Thanjavur section, spanning 77 km, has faced significant delays, leading to public outcry in the delta districts. After acquiring land for a four-laning project, NHAI opted to widen this stretch into a two-lane road with paved shoulders for Rs 396 crore. The completed work was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent Lok Sabha elections. A senior NHAI official stated that a consultant would soon be appointed to prepare the DPR. Following the report's completion, the four-laning works will commence as soon as funds are sanctioned by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
