The 246-kilometer Sohna-Dausa-Lalsot leg of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which would reduce the distance between Delhi and Jaipur's travel time from 5 to 6 hours to roughly 3.5 to 4 hours, was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which the PM referred to as "pragati ki aadhunik path" (the modern road to development), is a "beautiful picture" of a developing India, he said.
"Now the travel time between Delhi and Jaipur will reduce to half which earlier used to take 5-6 hours. Think of the time saved because of this project. Now people who do jobs and business in Delhi or used to travel frequently can return in the evening.
Trucks and tempos which transport goods won't need to spend the full day on the road," he said.
The first day will mark the beginning of toll collection by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). A single automobile drive from Delhi to Jaipur would cost Rs 585.
When the two under-construction linkages, DND Flyway (Delhi to Sohna and Bandikui to Jaipur Ring Road), which are currently under development, are finished in December 2024, the travel time between the capital and the Pink City would be cut by another half an hour. On Sunday, Modi also lay the cornerstone for two other projects including the 67-km, greenfield Bandikui-Jaipur NH link from the motorway.
When the two new linkages from DND and Bandikui become active, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highway Nitin Gadkari said he was certain that people will be able to travel from Delhi to Jaipur in two hours. "As per the existing rule, private cars are allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 120 kmph on expressways. The expressway has been designed better and the maximum speed could be increased. We will make a decision after proper scientific study. I strongly believe that the travel time will be reduced to two hours," he said. The minister reiterated the PM's plan of creating world-class infrastructure in India after assuming office in 2014. "He had suggested to us the satellite image for the best alignment and we have done it, which has reduced the distance between Delhi and Mumbai by 12% or 275 km," Gadkari said.
Regarding the three new motorways, the PM claimed that Jaipur will have direct access to the motorway via the link from Bandikui. In close proximity to Alwar, the second project will link the motorway to the Ambala-Kotputli route. This will make it easier for cars to drive to Punjab, Gujarat, MP, and Maharashtra from Haryana, Punjab, Himachal, and Jammu & Kashmir. The Lalsot-Karoli Road project will also link the area to the motorway.
According to PM Modi, the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway would revolutionise this entire region and serve as two powerful pillars of progress for Rajasthan and the nation. According to him, the two projects will improve the Mumbai-Delhi Economic Corridor and connect various areas of Rajasthan, Haryana, and western India to ports via roads and freight corridors. Speaking about how the PM Gati Shakti Masterplan powers the highway, Modi said plans have been made to install optical fibre, electrical lines, and gas pipes, and the extra land will be utilised for solar energy production and storage purposes.
