Tamil Nadu state highways to be made four lane in next 10 years

Under the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister鈥檚 Road Development Programme (RDP), around 2,200 km of state highways will be converted into four lane highways and 6,700 km into two lanes in the next 10 years.
This project will be taken up depending upon the traffic density.
In the current fiscal, two-lane roads of 250 kms will be converted into four lanes at Rs 2,000 crore and another 600 kms into two-lane roads at Rs 1,200 crore in the first phase, the government announced.
The toll charges collection in four toll plazas 鈥� at Perungudi on the Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Thoraipakkam, Medavakkam Salai, and Kalaignar Salai 鈥� will be discontinued from 30 August due to the start of the metro work.
Considering the growing vehicular traffic and needs of road users, the State government has developed a long-term vision for the next 10 years, as per the s Policy Note of Highways and Minor Ports Department (HMPD), for 2021-2022.
All-State highways meeting the traffic intensity would be upgraded to four lanes, and all major district roads joining taluk headquarters, state highways, and national highways will be upgraded to two lanes depending on the traffic intensity. Along the State Highways to decongest the traffic, Bypasses will be made for the municipalities, and up-gradation of panchayat union roads is in the offing.
The government intends to enhance the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board (TNMB) cargo handling capacity from 1.5 million tonne to 10 million tonnes. Action would be taken to expedite the Government of India's (GoI) State-level projects.
