Trichy-Chennai trunk route is being widened by the highways department

The work of the Trichy-Chennai trunk road up-gradation has begun. The road is 1.5 km long and costs Rs. 7 crore. It runs between the police checkpoint near Srirangam RTO and the Thiruvanaikoil junction (near Teppakulam).

The route acts as an entrance to the temples of Srirangam Ranganathaswamy and Thiruvanaikoil Jambukeswarar, which average at least 20,000 pilgrims each day. The route was tiny, even though city and mofussil buses were run along it to link the Perambalur and Chennai districts and the Samayapuram temple.

Under the comprehensive road infrastructure development programme (CRIDP), the state roads department has started the widening work due to the high vehicle traffic and frequent traffic jams, particularly during temple festivals. To properly create four lanes, retaining walls must be built at specific locations. In order to allow precipitation to flood the interior roads, the project also includes a stormwater drain.
