Chennai metro will have a double decker line in the phase II project which will be completed in approximately four years, and the commuters traveling in the metro will be able to seamlessly switch between the two stretches (Corridor 4 and Corridor 5) as they will be parallel to each other for a length of five km.
This will help commuters living in and around areas of Porur, Poonamallee, Karambakkam, Kattupakkam, among others to comfortably travel to a northern or southern part of Chennai city.
The Phase II project works have started in the city and it is being constructed with three corridors; Corridor 3- Madhavaram to SIPCOT, Corridor 4- Light House to Poonamallee, and Corridor 5- Madhavaram to Shollinganallur. A total amount of Rs 61,843 crore received from international banks, the State and Union governments will be spent on this project.
It is crucial for an extensive public transport system to have well-planned transit stations for the commuters to find their way easily.
In the project, Corridors 3 and 5 intersect at Sholinganallur, Madhavaram, and Thirumayilai. Corridors 4 and 5 comprise four transit stations since the alignment runs with the same direction for around five km, having one corridor that runs above the other.
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials, the double-decker stretch will have four stations developed at two levels, Karambakkam, Alwarthirunagar, Alapakkam, and Valasaravakkam.
Corridor 4 is on the first level and will be built around 13.5 meters above the ground level and Corridor 5 raised 21 meter above that.
