Baramulla-Uri rail link dream to be realised soon

Connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the Valley, is getting better every day. On one hand, the Kashmir Valley is expected to be linked to Kanyakumari by a rail link by the end of this year or in the first month of next year. On the other hand, Northern Railway is set to commence work on the 50-kilometre Baramulla-Uri stretch in Kashmir, for which tenders have been issued. Once completed, this project will connect the border area of Uri to the railways.

Northern Railways is considering starting the Final Location Survey for the new Baramulla-Uri line, and proposals are being invited by the Ministry. Tenders have been floated for Engineering survey work of a Railway line /roadway using modern survey techniques such as Aerial Survey and DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System) levelling and creation of DEM. The overall track from Baramulla to Uri will be 50 km.

Saqib Yousuf, Chief Area Manager (CAM), Kashmir Railways, has also confirmed this development, describing it as good news for the entire Kashmir. It is pertinent to note that the government has stated that Kashmir will soon be connected to Kanyakumari by rail link. On May 11, the long-pending demand for the Ratnipora Halt between Awantipora and Kakpora in Kashmir was finally fulfilled. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the additional halt as "Good news for deepening connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir" in a tweet, while sharing the news of the addition of a train halt by the Ministry of Railways in South Kashmir.
