DMRC to Equip Indian Railways with Advanced Wheel Profiling Systems?

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Indian Railways have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the procurement and installation of four Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement Systems (AWPMS). These advanced systems are designed to automatically measure train wheel profiles and related parameters, thereby eliminating human intervention and enhancing efficiency.

The MoU was formalised at Rail Bhawan on April 4. Under this agreement, DMRC will oversee the procurement, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the AWPMS units at locations specified by Indian Railways. The expected timeline for delivery and installation is within 18 months.

DMRC first implemented the AWPMS at its Mukundpur Depot in July 2023. The system employs laser scanners, stepper motors, RFID tags, and servers to conduct non-contact, real-time measurements of wheelset geometrical parameters. It also features automatic alert messaging for any detected abnormalities, significantly reducing the need for manual oversight.

This collaboration signifies a significant advancement for both DMRC and Indian Railways, paving the way for future joint ventures focused on technology exchange, expertise sharing, and mutual skill development.
