India Set to Unveil First Hydrogen-powered Train

India is preparing to introduce its first hydrogen-fuelled train later this month, marking a significant step toward sustainable and zero-emission transportation. The train has been manufactured by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) as part of the Indian Railways鈥 green energy initiatives.

To accelerate the transition to hydrogen-based rail transport, the Ministry of Railways has allocated Rs 28 billion for the development of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains in the 2023-24 fiscal year. These trains are expected to contribute to India's broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency in rail operations.

The first hydrogen train is anticipated to commence operations by March 25, running under Northern Railway鈥檚 Delhi Division. It will operate on the Jind鈥揝onipat route, covering a distance of 89 kilometre. The project represents a major milestone in India's commitment to adopting alternative fuel technologies in rail transport.

In addition to introducing hydrogen-fuelled trains, India has developed what is claimed to be the world鈥檚 most powerful hydrogen train engine, boasting a capacity of 1,200 horsepower (HP), which is more than double the engine power of similar trains launched in other countries.

With this development, India joins a growing number of nations investing in hydrogen-powered rail technology as part of decarbonisation efforts. Countries such as Germany, France, China, and the UK have already initiated hydrogen train projects, with Germany launching the world鈥檚 first hydrogen train fleet in 2022. India鈥檚 initiative reinforces its commitment to sustainable transportation and aligns with global trends in green mobility.
