JBS May Become India's Largest Metro Junction

The Jubilee Bus Station (JBS) in Secunderabad could potentially become India's largest Metro junction, surpassing the Kashmere Gate Metro station in Delhi in terms of interchange connectivity, provided that the plans put forward by Hyderabad Metro officials come to fruition. The proposed initiative aims to establish Metro links in all four directions, extending to the remotest areas of Greater Hyderabad.
The 60-km, uninterrupted Metro line running from Medchal to the Rajiv Gandhi International (RGI) Airport, passing through JBS, MGBS, and Chandrayangutta, is expected to become the longest single Metro line in India, surpassing Delhi鈥檚 59.2 km pink line.
Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) plans to construct a massive interchange station at JBS, making it a pivotal junction for new corridors leading to Medchal and Shamirpet in the north, Kokapet in the west, Patancheru in the northwest, Hayathnagar in the southeast, and the airport in the south.
The development of this large Metro hub would require consolidating around 30 acres of land from both state and defence authorities.
"This expansion will cater to commuters from Secunderabad and northern regions of the city, as well as travellers from northern Telangana," said HAML managing director NVS Reddy.
During a recent inspection, the MD, along with senior engineers and technical consultants, assessed various technical aspects of the Metro corridor alignments. The team considered merging the Paradise-Medchal and JBS-Shamirpet Metro corridors initially before splitting them into separate routes.
They examined multiple roads in the Cantonment area, including JBS-Secunderabad Club Road, Staff Road, Mudfort Road, and others, to determine the optimal alignment. A key observation from the inspection revealed that merging both Metro corridors at JBS initially would offer significant advantages.
"The alignment can join at the National Highway junction near Bowenpally, utilising the existing widened service road median without obstructing ongoing NH flyover construction," stated an HAML official.
The JBS-Shamirpet Metro corridor will extend from the existing Metro pillar near Secunderabad Club as a double-elevated structure over the planned HMDA elevated corridor on Rajiv Rahadari (Karimnagar Highway), which will be expanded as part of the project.
