The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project has reached a significant milestone with the completion of a 210-meter-long pre-stressed concrete (PSC) bridge over National Highway-48 at Dabhan village near Nadiad, Kheda district, Gujarat. This bridge, situated between the Anand and Ahmedabad bullet train stations, was finalised on January 9, 2025.
Constructed using the Balanced Cantilever Method, the bridge features 72 precast segments and spans configured as 40 meters + 65 meters + 65 meters + 40 meters. According to the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd., this method is ideal for longer spans.
Substantial progress has also been made in other aspects of the high-speed rail project, including 253 kilometers of viaduct work, 290 kilometers of girder casting, and 358 kilometers of pier construction. Additionally, bridges over 13 rivers and five steel bridges have been completed. Noise barriers have been installed over 112 kilometers, and track construction has begun at several locations in Gujarat.
The project includes a 21-kilometer tunnel between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Thane in Maharashtra and seven mountain tunnels under construction in Palghar district using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). In Gujarat鈥檚 Valsad district, one mountain tunnel has already been completed.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project connects key economic hubs, including Mumbai, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad, in the high-growth states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. The project鈥檚 Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) is estimated at 11.8%, as per a feasibility study by JICA.
