Mumbai Metro Line 4 Costs Increase by Rs 12.74 Bn

The cost of constructing Mumbai Metro Line 4, which will connect Wadala to Kasarvadavali, has increased by 50%, now reaching Rs 1,274.80 crore. Originally set at Rs 2,632.25 crore, the project faces severe budget constraints and has been delayed by five years. This information was revealed in response to an RTI application filed by activist Anil Galgali.

The construction contract for the 32.32-km elevated corridor was awarded in April 2018 to RInfra-ASTALDI and CHEC-TPL. The project, which will feature 30 stations, was originally scheduled to be completed by July 2021 but is now expected to finish by August 2026.

Metro Line 4 is intended to improve urban mobility by linking major transit hubs, such as the Eastern Express Highway, Central Railway, and other metro lines. However, with costs now exceeding the budget by nearly 50%, concerns about mismanagement and inefficiency are growing, especially as Mumbaikars await the completion.
