Rapid Rail Project Delays PWD Flyover at Metcalfe House Crossing

A clash between two major infrastructure projects in north Delhi has disrupted the Public Works Department鈥檚 (PWD) plan to build a six-lane flyover at the busy Metcalfe House intersection. The flyover was planned at the T-junction where Outer Ring Road meets Hedgewar Road to ease traffic and improve connectivity to Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

However, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) is developing a section of the Sarai Kale Khan-Karnal Namo Bharat rapid rail corridor that overlaps the proposed flyover location. This corridor is part of the semi-high-speed regional rapid transit system (RRTS) and is now in advanced planning stages.

PWD received a no-objection certificate request from NCRTC, forcing a review of the flyover alignment. A fresh feasibility study for a double-decker flyover might be commissioned to accommodate both projects. Earlier feasibility approval has halted construction tenders.

NCRTC officials said their corridor was planned before the flyover and that both projects are vital for public convenience, calling for a balanced solution.
