Thane-Bhiwandi Metro Line-5: MMRDA mounts spans over Majiwada Flyover

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a major milestone in the ongoing Metro Line-5 (Thane-Bhiwandi) project by successfully erecting two critical spans鈥57.50 meters and 46.00 meters鈥攐ver the busy Majiwada Flyover using high-capacity cranes (450T and 700T).

The complex operation, which required precise engineering and extensive safety measures, was executed in a densely populated area above a congested roadway. According to MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, the team completed the task within just five hours during the night, ensuring minimal traffic disruption with the support of local authorities.

The 57.50-meter span between Pier 10 and Pier 11 was lifted using tandem girders weighing 290 MT on Ghodbunder Road, while the 46.00-meter span on the Thane-Bhiwandi Road utilised a super-lift arrangement to account for a 20-meter crane radius. This operation highlights the technical expertise and commitment of the team to completing the project on time.

The Thane-Bhiwandi Metro Line-5 project is being implemented in two phases. Phase-I, covering a 12.7 km stretch with six elevated stations, is 93% complete, with track installation and architectural finishes currently underway. The depot for Line-5 is planned at Kasheli, and preliminary work has commenced. The total cost for Metro Line-5 is estimated at Rs 84.17 billion.

The process of appointing a general consultant for Phase-II between Bhiwandi and Kalyan is in progress, with the appointment of a civil contractor to follow. Once completed, Metro Line-5 will provide interconnectivity with the ongoing Metro Line-4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavli) and the proposed Metro Line-12 (Kalyan-Taloja), along with the existing Central Railway suburban network, significantly enhancing regional connectivity.
