Water taxi services launched in Mumbai

Mumbai is ready to have a new transportation system with the launch of state-of-the-art water taxi services.

The services would be formally commissioned in January by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the exact dates are being decided. The project is a combined initiative of the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) and Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT). The two service operators will be West Coast Marine and Infinity Harbour Services LLP.

The two points from Mumbai for the services would be the Domestic Cruise Terminal (DCT) at Ferry Wharf and International Cruise Terminal at Ballard Pier. The government is operating on different routes from DCT to Belapur, Nerul, Airoli, Vashi, Rewas, Dharamtar, Kanhoji Angre Island, Karanja and Thane.

Another way is from ICT to Elephanta Island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a tourist site. It will additionally render an alternative mode of travel for commuters travelling between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, besides road and rail. The water taxis will take approximately 30 minutes to finish a single journey, which will majorly lower the travel time between Mumbai and its satellite township.
