In a major push to its green ports initiative and a vision to achieve sustainability, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) recently inaugurated a comprehensive solid waste management project. In this new project, 10 mt per day solid waste is processed as per solid waste management (SWM) rules 2016 based on Bhabha Atomic Research (BARC) technology. The project is based in a biogas plant for 5 mt per day capacity with power generation from and production of biogas, and power generation setup. The government鈥檚 Swachh Bharat Mission has envisioned waste management, hygiene, and sanitation across the nation under a collaborative framework of multiple stakeholders. JNPT is the biggest container handling port in India. On the environment conservation front, the port has undertaken several green initiatives, which include harnessing solar power, sewage treatment plants for recycling of wastewater, e-RTGCs, and also projects like the development of an eco-park, marine conservancy, and comprehensive plantation.
