Trial run for Thiruverumbur water supply improvement scheme begins

The Trichy Corporation has started trial runs of the Thiruverumbur water supply improvement scheme (WSIS), which aims to supply water via pipe connections in the five added wards.

The Rs 63.7 crore project, funded by the German Development Bank, sources water from the Ayyalamman Ghats since the work on sourcing water from the Cauvery bed at Srirangam was delayed because of the extensive flow of water in the river.

Thiruverumbur WSIS is being executed in three distinct phases, of which two phases have been almost finished. New pipelines for nearly 211 km were set up to connect the water source with eight new overhead tanks in Thiruverumbur, which will help about 1 lakh people in wards 61 to 65.

Last week, Trichy Corporation linked the pipe network to the Ayyalamman Ghats water headwork to check the pipelines. In case of any seepage, rectification work will be done.

A senior official with Trichy Corporation told the media that out of the total fund approved, they have used Rs 52.9 crore till now. They intend to start the project before December 2022. Water connections for 17,636 properties were expedited by the civic organisation out of the planned 19,343 connections.

The project started in 2016 and will help localities like Kilakalkandarkottai, Pappakurichi, Thiruverumbur town panchayat, Ellakudi and Alathur village panchayats that were merged with Trichy city in 2011 and renamed as wards 61, 62, 63, 64 and 65.
