The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs has approved the construction of 235,000 homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 鈥� Urban 2.0 (PMAY鈥慤 2.0) during the third meeting of its Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee. This brings the total sanctioned units under the scheme to 710,000, affirming the government's commitment to affordable urban housing.
The homes were approved across nine states鈥擜ssam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh鈥攖hrough the Beneficiary Led Construction (BLC) and Affordable Housing in Partnership (AHP) verticals of PMAY鈥慤 2.0.
Of the homes approved, over 125,000 are designated for women, including single women and widows, with an additional 44 homes allocated to transgender individuals. The scheme also emphasises inclusivity, assigning 42,400 units to SC beneficiaries, 17,574 to STs, and 113,414 to the OBC community.
Central assistance of up to Rs 250,000 per housing unit is available, with eligibility criteria including households without any existing 鈥榩ucca鈥� home. For the BLC and AHP verticals, families earning up to Rs 300,000 annually qualify, while for the Interest Subsidy Scheme (ISS), the threshold is Rs 900,000 per year.
Officials urged larger states to develop their own affordable housing policies, akin to Maharashtra鈥檚, and attach beneficiaries early in the AHP process to prevent unoccupied units. Recommendations also included adopting Transit-Oriented Development (ToD) around major transit hubs such as Bharat stations and metro networks.
PMAY鈥慤rban, initially launched in 2015 and restructured as PMAY鈥慤 2.0, has already delivered more than 9.3 million homes to urban India. With this latest approval, up to 10 million EWS, LIG, and MIG families are set to benefit from secure housing in the coming years.
