UFlex Unveils Recycled PET Resin for Food Packaging

20 Jun 2025
UFlex, India鈥檚 largest multinational flexible packaging and solutions provider, has launched an innovative single-pellet resin solution that enables the use of recycled PET (rPET) in food and beverage packaging. This FSSAI-compliant product combines recycled and virgin PET into a single high-purity pellet with excellent mechanical and thermal stability, clarity, and low acetaldehyde content. Importantly, it is compatible with existing PET manufacturing lines, allowing brands to adopt recycled content without altering current infrastructure.

The solution aligns with new FSSAI guidelines supporting the Government of India鈥檚 Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy. From 1 April 2025, brands using Category-1 rigid plastic packaging such as PET bottles must include a minimum of 30 per cent recycled content by FY26. UFlex鈥檚 innovation meets the Food Contact Material-recycled PET (FCM-rPET) standards, which mandate a validated decontamination process for safe direct food contact. It also complies with international norms and has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA).

Ashish Saxena, Joint President 鈥 Packaging Films Business at UFlex Limited, stated, 鈥淪ince our inception, we have always been committed to pioneering sustainable packaging solutions. Our new single-pellet solution will be a game-changer for food and beverage brands working towards EPR compliance under the new FSSAI guidelines. Our Rs 3.17 billion investment in two new recycling plants in Noida underscores our commitment to India鈥檚 plastic waste management vision.鈥

UFlex is the first and only Indian company to receive USFDA approval for recycling PET, polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP) for use in food-grade applications.

The company currently has a global recycling capacity of 72,300 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA), with an additional 39,600 MTPA capacity nearing commissioning. It has already recycled over 5 billion post-consumer PET bottles, converting them into high-quality raw materials for sustainable packaging. In FY25 alone, UFlex recycled 8,200 metric tonnes of mixed flexible plastic waste.

With recycling plants across India, Poland, Egypt, and Mexico, UFlex operates one of the most advanced plastic waste processing networks globally. It remains the only Indian company developing innovative solutions for mixed flexible waste and post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials at both domestic and international levels.
