Railways Launches Drone System for Cleaning in Assam

20 Jun 2025
In a first-of-its-kind move, Indian Railways has introduced a drone-powered cleaning system at Kamakhya Railway Station in Assam, signalling a major step forward in modern railway maintenance. The drones, fitted with high-pressure water jets, are designed to clean hard-to-reach areas of train coaches and station premises, offering improved hygiene and operational efficiency.

Launched as a pilot project in April, the initiative replaces manual cleaning efforts that often involved safety risks for workers. The drones spray water and disinfectants over elevated and inaccessible surfaces, such as coach roofs, ensuring thorough cleaning while significantly reducing human effort and time.

The Ministry of Railways said the system delivers greater precision and consistency in cleanliness, aligning with the department鈥檚 broader mission to integrate automation into everyday operations. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh also praised the development, calling it a clear example of technology driving national progress.

This is not Indian Railways鈥 first foray into drone technology. Since 2018, drones have been employed for infrastructure inspections, safety monitoring, and real-time surveillance.

Given the success of the trial at Kamakhya, officials are considering a nationwide rollout, which could transform the way railway stations and trains are maintained across India. By embracing automation and smart tools, Indian Railways is not only enhancing passenger safety and comfort but also setting new benchmarks for innovation in public service delivery.
