State-owned engineering and manufacturing firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) told the media that it has played a major role in the successful implementation of ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) link between the western region grid and southern region grid.
A company statement said that BHEL had achieved another milestone by playing a major role in the successful implementation of the +800 kV, 6,000 MW Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) link between the western and the southern grid.
The project will provide relief to the power deficit southern region grid. For this project, among other equipment and systems, BHEL has majorly contributed by providing shunt reactors, converter transformers, filter bank capacitors, and instrument transformers from its Bhopal unit; and thyristor valves from its Bengaluru's Electronics Division, according to the statement.
In 2016, BHEL with the Hitachi-ABB Power Grids Limited partnership had acquired this landmark order from Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL).
This project is BHEL's second ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission project. Before this, it had successfully implemented the Agra Converter terminal for North-East Agra +800 kV, 6,000 MW, Multi-Terminal HVDC transmission link in September-2016 and September-2017.
In India, BHEL has been linked with HVDC projects, since its inception by setting the first HVDC link in the country between Barsoor in Chhattisgarh and Lower Sileru in Andhra Pradesh.
BHEL has set the manufacturing plants for HVDC products up to 800 kV and undertakes turnkey projects from concept to commissioning as an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor.
