India Takes a Historic Leap in Green Mobility

In a landmark move towards India鈥檚 net-zero emissions goal by 2070, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, and Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, jointly flagged off India鈥檚 first-ever hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials, launched by Tata Motors in New Delhi on 4 March 2025.
Speaking at the event, Shri Nitin Gadkari emphasised the revolutionary potential of hydrogen in transforming India鈥檚 transportation sector. He remarked:
"Hydrogen is the fuel of the future, with immense potential to reduce emissions and enhance energy self-reliance. This initiative will accelerate the transition towards sustainable heavy-duty mobility, moving us closer to an efficient, low-carbon future. I congratulate Tata Motors for taking the lead in enabling hydrogen-powered, green, and smart transportation."
Echoing this sentiment, Shri Pralhad Joshi highlighted the role of green hydrogen in achieving India鈥檚 energy independence and decarbonising the transport sector: "This trial is a significant milestone in showcasing the potential of green hydrogen in India's mobility sector. As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, it underscores our commitment to driving innovation and contributing to global climate goals. I commend Tata Motors for pioneering this transformative effort."
This historic trial marks a crucial step in India鈥檚 green energy transition, reinforcing Tata Motors鈥� role in developing sustainable long-haul transportation. Awarded the tender for this pilot project, Tata Motors will conduct trials under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy鈥檚 (MNRE) National Green Hydrogen Mission, assessing the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered freight transport and the infrastructure required for its large-scale adoption.
