NTPC to set up two pilot projects on hydrogen fuel cells

NTPC, India's largest integrated power generating company, has issued a global expression of interest (EoI) to set up two pilot projects at NTPC premises a standalone fuel-cell based backup power system and a standalone fuel-cell based microgrid system with hydrogen production using an electrolyser.

NTPC aims to expand its green and clean fuel footprint through these projects. The projects will be implemented and commercialised with the help of NTPC.

This is in line with NTPC's efforts to adopt hydrogen-based technologies. It has already begun a pilot project to produce methanol using carbon captured from power plant flue gas and hydrogen obtained through electrolysis. In the field of carbon capture and green hydrocarbon synthesis, this could be a potential solution toward Atma Nirbhar Bharat.

The energy major is looking into using hydrogen-based Fuel Cell-Electrolyser systems for backup power. Currently, diesel-based power generators are used to meet backup power requirements and microgrid applications.

NTPC is India's largest power utility, with 65,810 MW of installed capacity (including JVs) and plans to grow to 130 GW by 2032.
