Statkraft announced the commissioning of its first large-scale solar power plant in India to ramp up solar and wind power developers across the country. Nellai Solar Power plant of 76 MW is located in Tamil Nadu and will generate 120 GWh of renewable power annually, equal to the power consumption of over 500,000 homes in India. Executive Vice President of Statkraft, Jürgen Tzschoppe, said that the company is focusing on developing greenfield solar projects in India. Nellai plant will support its strategy to strengthen its industrial presence in the solar segment. Nellai solar park is being developed under the Indian Group Captive model, in which customers hold 26% of the plant and purchase electricity based on long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs). German Belectric Photovoltaic India was responsible for the construction of the plant and will deliver the operation and maintenance (O&M) services for three years. Statkraft Country Manager, India, Rahul Varshney, said that this plant would help industries in Tamil Nadu meet their renewable energy requirement at affordable rates. He added that the company aims to become a leading developer and operator of hydro, wind and solar assets across technologies and business models. The company has had its presence in India since 2004, having a production capacity of 215 MW. Its 150 MW Tidong hydropower plant in Himachal Pradesh is under construction and will be complete by the end of this year.
