According to the U S Green Building Council (USGBC) and Green Business Certification Inc (GBCI), it was stated that India had emerged as a leading country in LEED Zero green building projects, surpassing the United States and China. It was mentioned by the rating agencies that India had 73 LEED Zero certified projects, which accounted for 45% of the total of over 150 certifications. Haryana and Tamil Nadu were leading the way in certifications within India. The second and third highest number of LEED Zero certifications were held by the United States and China, with 47 (30%) and 15 (10%) certifications, respectively.
The global leader in total LEED Zero certifications was revealed to be the India-based real estate developer DLF, with 45 certifications. Following closely behind was the ITC Group with 15 certifications.
Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, the managing director of Southeast Asia and Middle East for GBCI India, commented on the significant role that buildings play in carbon emissions and the achievement of global climate goals. He highlighted India's leadership position in LEED Zero projects, stating that it reflected the country's commitment to sustainability and the adoption of innovative green building practices. He also mentioned that this position was in line with India's ambitious target of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2070. Padmanabhan expressed pride in partnering with companies that are leading the way towards net zero and creating a greener and more sustainable built environment.
It was noted that currently, around one-third of all carbon emissions in India originate from the building and construction sector. LEED Zero projects encompass various sectors, including office spaces, hospitality facilities, retail malls, industrial manufacturing projects, and data centres. These projects are recognized for achieving net zero or net positive status in the categories of carbon, energy, water, or waste. The total certified square footage of LEED Zero projects has exceeded 35 million to date.
