Telangana has consistently experienced rapid growth since its formation, with a notable 70% increase in economic output over the past decade, driven primarily by the services sector concentrated around Hyderabad. However, regional disparities have led to uneven development across districts. In an effort to address this imbalance, the Telangana government has earmarked Rs 205 billion for the construction of an airport at Mamnoor, near Warangal. This will be the state's second airport, as it currently only has one, while neighboring Andhra Pradesh has more. The airport, capable of handling aircraft like the A320, has the potential to significantly enhance both passenger services and industrial growth. Proposals to develop airports in other cities like Adilabad and Ramagundam have not materialized, but the Warangal project represents a potential game-changer. Additionally, the city’s master plan, which includes Rs.4,000 billion for underground drainage, shows promise for overall urban development. Though progress on initiatives like the smart cities project has been slow, the successful implementation of the airport and other urban development projects could transform the region’s economic landscape within five years. To ensure these plans succeed, it is critical that they avoid delays and corruption, and not remain another set of unrealized proposals.
