MoRTH suspends registration and RC fees of electric vehicles

In May 2021, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) had revealed the draft notification to revise the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, offering to exempt fees for issue or renewal of Registration Certificate (RC) of Battery Operated Vehicles (BOV).

The purpose is to promote e-mobility and quicker adoption of electric vehicles in India. However, many states suspended registration fees for the green vehicle in their electric vehicle (EV) policies, the existing notification would benefit and bring unity for EV customers in the country.

The combined EV purchases for FY21 were 238,120 units, 19.41% reduced compared to FY2020. As the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns impacted the sales, the electric two-three wheeler purchases were at 143,837 units and 88,378 units each based on a year-on-year.

In FY2021, most of the electric two-wheelers came from low-speed models of 103,000 units. Whereas, on the other hand, 40,836 high-speed models were bought at the same time.

According to the media, 11 prime electric two-wheeler manufacturers in India announced that in the first six months of 2021, overall 29,288 units were purchased, exceeding the total sales of 2020 (25,598 units).

The electric vehicle industry is likely to develop further, with the ministry providing exemption of waiver for registration fees for the green vehicles.
