Nitin Gadkari To Launch Bharat NCAP

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, will introduce the eagerly anticipated Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat NCAP) on August 22, 2023, giving the country's push for improved road safety a major boost. India will now have its own independent crash testing program, where the government will evaluate recently released vehicles on a variety of criteria to determine their suitability for the road. This program represents a significant advancement in the Government's efforts to increase road safety in India by strengthening the requirements for motor vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes.

No government or commercial organization in India now tests the road safety of the vehicles sold there.

However, as part of their SaferCarsForIndia program, Global NCAP, a non-profit organization with headquarters in South Africa, conducts crash tests on new cars sold in India. The examinations run by the Global NCAP are primarily voluntary, though, and are not required by the government.
