Afcons wraps Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train's ADIT tunnel

Afcons Infrastructure announced the completion of tunnelling work for an Additionally Driven Intermediate Tunnel (ADIT) measuring 394 meters long as part of the Mumbai ? Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project, which spans 508.17 kilometres.

The ADIT tunnel, featuring a 42-meter deep inclined shaft, had been constructed over a period of 6 months on the eastern side of the 20.377-kilometre underground Package C-2 (BKC ? Shilphata). Its primary purpose was to facilitate access for construction workers and vehicles to a point where excavation work for the main-line tunnel could commence using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). The portal of the ADIT tunnel is situated in Ghansoli, Navi Mumbai (as per Google Maps). From its farthest end, NATM tunneling will proceed in opposite directions ? westward to Sawli?s Shaft-3 for a distance of 1.6 kilometers and eastwards towards Shilphata?s tunnel portal, covering an approximate distance of 1.8 kilometres. The contract for Package C-2, valued at Rs 63.97 billion, was awarded to Afcons Infrastructure by India?s National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) in June 2023, with a deadline of 1888 days (equivalent to 5.17 years).

Afcons is tasked with constructing three shafts at BKC Station, Vikhroli, and Sawli, at depths of approximately 36 meters, 56 meters, and 39 metres respectively. These shafts will be utilised to launch and retrieve three Mega Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) with a diameter of around 13.1 meters, to bore through approximately 16 kilometres of tunnel.
