Construction begins for Surat multi-modal transport hub

The construction of the first phase of India鈥檚 first multi-modal transportation hub (MMTH) has been started in Surat, with the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) approving the Rs 8.78 billion tender on November 30.

According to the information given by RLDA, the railway station is envisioned as an MMTH and is being developed in three phases. The first phase of work involving the fabrication, cement blocks, etc, has started at the station. It will be developed in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) mode, with the project completion target set for four years, i.e 2026.

Union Minister of State for Railways and Textiles, Darshana Jardosh, said in a video message, 鈥淪urat will have India鈥檚 first MMTH project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of the project and the tender has been approved. The first phase work has begun and all three phases are likely to be completed by 2026.鈥�

The total area for the development of Surat MMTH is 331,000 square meters. In the first phase of construction of the east side station building, the west side station building and concourses and work in the platform area have been taken up along with the ISBT bus terminal.

The Surat MMTH will be universally accessible with skywalks, lounges, medical room, and retail spaces. The station will be well integrated with the GSRTC bus station, metro station, BRTS and city bus services, and other modes of public transportation.
